Heres my honest opinion on Bolt:

It has the potential to be a GREAT browser, there still is a lot of work that needs to be done with it.... The landscape orientation isn't up to par, the built in flash media player is still buggy in landscape orientation when you view a video it glitches out and turns into portrait...

Honestly when I first used this browser I fell in love with the things it could do... Yes it does take HTML browsing on a J2ME phone too a very GREAT level, but like I said it's still buggy... When they get this browser VERY stable and it's working with all kinds of stuff then and only THEN! Will I be overly happy that the new Bolt has been released.

Here's a pre-modded jar which you can send to your phone for a fullscreen Bolt beta 3, the latest version. You'll have to goatbreak it then to avoid the "Ask, always allow" nonsense, but that's all. I think this is simpler than the jad version, which didn't work for me anyway....

As long as you have a data plan, no, you will not be charged for accessing Wikipedia through a browser, such a Bolt.

From the Bolt FAQ:
Quote
Does BOLT support FLASH?
No. BOLT does not support Flash but we do support FLV Format (as in streaming video Web sites including www.youtube.com, www.myspace.com, video.google.com, etc.)

source: http://boltbrowser.com/faq.html#flash

I know that "Flash" is "Shockwave Flash" (e.g. filename.swf) but the answer above would suggest that we can now watch the "regular" YouTube videos (i.e. on the main YouTube site, not just on the mobile [m.youtube.com] site).

My question:

The inability to use the Pandora and Last.fm websites is a known issue on this site and is said to be a "Flash" issue... does anyone know if those sites use SWF (Shockwave Flash) or FLV (Flash Video)?

I was thinking the use of Bolt could possibly be a 'workaround' for this issue.

I don't yet have Bolt installed.  I was just "throwing that out there" in case anyone who already has Bolt installed was interested in checking it out.

ETA: I just got my Eternity and have ordered an accessories package via Amazon (which will include my data/USB cable).  So, in other words, I don't have one yet.  I have an unlimited data package but the full instructions on page 1 make it sound like I need the data cable to install this "right."

OK, I went ahead and installed Bolt like a newb, as I still don't have my data cable yet.  Using my laptop, I went online first to Pandora and discovered that my free trial had expired, so I didn't even try that on my phone.  I did some searching online and figured out that Pandora.tv delivers FLV files (duh), while Pandora Radio delivers in [undetermined/both?].

I did some more searching online and found pretty much the same thing for Last.fm... the Last.fm videos are delivered in FLV (again, duh), and the Last.fm music is delivered in [undetermined].  However, this YouTube "How-To" video for the Replay Media Catcher streaming media downloader makes it appear that Last.fm music is delivered via FLV:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/HjDIF4JlrTE&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/HjDIF4JlrTE&rel=1</a>

If you will look at the video ~ 1:13, you will see three files: 2 [webdump] FLV files and 1 MP3 file.  I'm not sure if that's a FLV-containered mp3 or what, though...

Anyhow, the Last.fm route looked more promising than the Pandora route, so I fired up Last.fm in my [uncustomized] Bolt browser, and was able to navigate the site just fine, to include logging in (using the Bolt lite authentication).  I clicked on "Listen To Library" or whatever it's called, and Bolt tried to load up the player.  It would get anywhere from 26% to 36% loaded, and then hang.

I don't know whether this was related to my personal install of Bolt being weak and whether it would work better on someone else's customized install, or whether this particular version of Bolt just can't handle the Last.fm player, from a resources perspective (like f0r71fy alluded to in his post at the top of the page).
