Google Officially Intros the Nexus One

Today, 10:15 AM   by Eric M. Zeman   updated Today, 2:03 PM

Today at a press event in California, Google officially announced the Nexus One Android phone. The Nexus One was designed in partnership with HTC. HTC CEO Peter Chou confirmed that the Nexus One has a 3.7-inch AMOLED display with HVGA (480 x 800) resolution and 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The Nexus One blends both the HTC experience and Google experience. It has a trackball with multi-color notification LED, as well as light and proximity sensors, compass and GPS. Other specs include inline noise cancellation: two mics, front and back, which enables nose suppression. Custom engraving on the lower bezel and measurements of 22.5mm in thickness, with weight coming in at 130g. It also has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. The Nexus One runs on Android 2.1. The Nexus One has "living wallpaper," that users can interact with. It's dynamic and moving, and continues to move underneath my personalization. Tap on the water and it ripples. There are five homescreens for personalization on the Nexus One. The Nexus One is also the first to showcase Android's new 3D framework in the Android platform. The app launcher is now 3D and resembles a vertical ribbon or scroll wheel. Other new features include a re-worked image gallery, which now automatically groups photos by date and location, and will sync with Picasa web albums in the background. In Android 2.1, Google has voice-enabled every text field across the entire platform. Google also demonstrated Google Earth for Android. Google indicated that the Nexus One -- which it terms a "superphone" -- will be the first in a class of similarly-capable devices. The device is available starting today from a Google-hosted web store or from wireless network operators. It will cost $529 unlocked, or $179 from T-Mobile to start. It will be available from Verizon and its partner Vodafone later in 2010.

Anyone thinking about shelling out Half a grand for this baby?

ATT is supposedly expected to have it soon also. Can't believe they would agree to put a competitor to the iphone up for use. Only a rumor at this point.

I heard on Attack of the Show on G4 that Verizon is getting it in the Spring. They also said it won't work on AT&T's 3G network.

So if we don't search we get yelled at. If we find the thread on a subject but it is 3 months old we can't reply? But if we create a new thread we get yelled at with a link pointing to the old thread?

Catch 22?  Wink

The Nexus one is starting to look like a failure.  As many would expect, most people aren't willing to shell out the $529 so its not selling well, and customer service calls to google haven't gone too well either.  More than anything though, the Nexus one can't keep up with other Android phones that keep coming out, and I guess recently they canceled the Nexus One for Verizon in favor of the new Droid Incredible thats coming out, thats virtually the same thing but with a better camera and the Sense UI.

If google releases another phone, I imagined they'll probably just go the subsidized route.

So the saga continues. Grass is not always greener with a different phone. And HTC has many issues right now with all their phones. They actually make samsung look good. The biggest issue is competition and technology changing too quickly. Phones are rushed out to make the quick buck.

lol @ technology moving fast

it reminds me of way back probably ten or so years ago. the new computers had gotten so fast that everyone thought they had broken computers or sound cards or maybe windows was broken on the new machines.
people that did not use a shut down sound did not have broken computers.
turns out, they were shutting down quicker than the shut down sound could finish, which often caused a problem with your audio the next time you booted up.
microsoft eventually figured it out and put in a two second delay before the pc would shut down so the sound could finish.

there's really no point to be made. i'm just watching star wars on spike in the 80 degree heat. so i got nothing else to do but storytell.
