At&t's version of the Galaxy S. It has the 4 inch Super AMOLED display like the original Galaxy S but has a new look (Kinda looks like a blackberry storm to me Huh) Same Hummingbird processor, 5 mp camera but no camera flash. ships with android 2.1, it will be available July 18 for $199.99 with a two year contract.  There will also be other Galaxy S variations The Epic 4g on sprint, The Vibrant on T-mobile, and the Fascinate on Verizon.

I kinda want to know what happened to the mouse on it?  Aren't Android phones supposed to have a mouse of some sort?  THe original Android shows a touch pad similar to that of a laptop but on a much smaller scale.  Most just have a mouse nub.  But not just the Captivate, but all 4 don't have a mouse.  This is kind of a deal breaker for me in away because on my Mythic (and my eternity before it) i bump links all the time.  I've liked status's I haven't meant to like on facebook, I've deleted categories on media net, and sometimes I've just ended up on another page while reading something.  It just sucks scrolling with your finger.

Other than that I've played with a Captivate in the store and I like it.  But the lack of a mouse is making me second guess getting one!

zoom in?  How does that help?

But yeah I wonder whats up with the mouse pad being missing from the American galaxy s, as well as the call and hang up keys.  my buddy at work has a droid eris, it has all 4 of the buttons the Captivate does, plus Call, hangup, and a mouse 'nub'.  Seems that is the standard on android phones, so I'm wondering why Samsung decided such an odd design choice to eliminate 3 pieces of control.  I guess they are not needed, they are all "convenience" buttons but they were nice convenience buttons

It's still nice to see a good android phone on AT&T, and something on AT&T that can step up to the iPhone.

i don't see a need for a "mouse", i have one on my samsung moment as well as on my samsung intercept and other than for a few games (which will be unplayable without them, Evo failed there too) i don't use it.  it's honestly a waste of time outside of like 3 games...

send/end call buttons are not needed as long as there is a dedicated lock button (which the Galaxy S line does have)

Track balls, and track pads really aren't used a whole lot from my experiences and from what I've read for full touch screen devices.  I'm using a nexus one now that has a ball, but the only real use I get out of it is the fact that it lights up when I have messages/emails and such.

Well, of course, the web browser's suck on the Eternity and Mythic, and the lag causes me to bump links alot.  Maybe a phone with a browser that doesn't lag as bad, it might be better.  I know I don't have the problem as much in Opera, its just the Media.net/Dolphin Browser where the issue occurs alot.

My contract with AT&T ends in february, but I'm eligable for upgrade now.  I thought about going over there and seeing if they give any kind of discount to fed ex employees, since you know it would seem AT&T ships everything through Fed Ex.  If its a good discount I may stay with AT&T and upgrade to the Captivate.  I'm still really considering switching to Sprint when my contract's up, but the Captivate gives me more reason to stay.

But on that note the version of the Galaxy S sprint's getting, the Epic 4G looks, well Epic!

Newer phones also have capacitive screens which is probably the biggest difference, not the lag.

i have no issues with my browser.
i also have no issue with our screen type. in fact, i prefer it over the other type.

the funny thing is that i came here today wanting to make a smart assed question but i see its already been answered.
but here goes anyway...

the galaxy s has been out for a few weeks. some of us haven't even gotten one yet. so what phone is coming out in a few months that we should all ignore the galaxy and wish and hope for now ?

The Samsung Eternity II A597 was released to the FCC (and passed, btw) not to long ago last month.  The FCC didn't release any pictures, just a diagram of the little sticker behind the battery.  Maybe it'll have Bada or Android (yeah right - Samsung AT&T GSM smartphones have model numbers that start with I [but then again the model number might not even be finalized yet.  Example: the Samsung Impression was i887 before released, but was changed to a887]).  So TouchWiz 3.0?    Huh

Cor-master:  You'll probably be better off going to wirefly.com to get your Captivate on a renewal.  $99.99 with free FedEx shipping if you're on a single line plan.  If you're trying to upgrade a single line on a family plan, I think the Captivate will be $149 instead.  I believe it was $199.99 through AT&T online.   FedEx should have a corporate discount plan with AT&T, where you can get a discount on your base package too.  I'm on a 20% corporate discount with my company.

Our Captivates will arrive tomorrow.  No I wasn't looking to upgrade because I wanted to see what other Android offerings might arrive in the coming months, but hubby was hellbent on this phone and wasn't going to accept anything else (dammit I hate when he's so stubborn).  So....2 Captivate phones for $200 -- and I may end up and ebay mine for some sweeeeeeet cashola -- these damn phones aren't going for less than about $450 on ebay right now!

Oh....hey everybody! It's been awhile Smiley

Cool thanks for the tips,  I may look into the corporate discount.  I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, as like you were, I'm wanting to see what other android offerings are out there.  And while the newness has wore off of the Mythic, I don't hate it, and I could easily go another 6 months - year pending it doesn't break or something.

I'm still considering sprint too, mainly just because of the price.  ITs a $150 for me and my wife's family plan on AT&T, but It's only $120 on Sprint, which includes 1500 anytime minutes, unlimited mobile calling, unlimited data, and unlimited text.  Also there is no smartphone fee... there is a $10 fee for 4G phones, but even then me and my wife can bot have Evo's for less than what AT&T would offer us with dumb phones!

The main thing is I want a smartphone, an android phone to be exact, and I don't wanna pay more than I am now.  I'm also concerned about AT&T's new smartphone data plans...is 2GB going to be enough for everything Android can do?

As for turning around and wanting a better phone, meh I know how it is with phones, and android is the new big thing, and phone manufactures are constantly trying to one up eachother.  That being said if I had a Hero/Droid Eris I wouldn't be complaining about it... heck my brother has a T-mobile G1, the original Android phone and I'm jealous of it!

Well inspite of all my complaining of AT&T I did the math and realized that switching to sprint was only a $4 savings.  It would have been about a $24 savings but with the stupid 4G charge on the nice phones (and considering me and my wife were both looking at epics), it wasn't that big of enough savings for me to switch.  So I headed over to Best buy on Sunday and bought 2 Captivates, one for me, and one for my wife.

We love them honestly.  I haven't stopped playing with my phone since Sunday, and it seems I'm learning something new about it everyday.  I really don't see how an iphone can be any better than this.  Android really does give Apple a run for its money.

I originally complained about the lack of a mouse, but honestly the mouse seems like a dying thing anyway on Android phones, as well as call and hangup buttons.  The screen and the OS works well enough that the mouse and call/hangup buttons aren't necessary and honestly it looks nicer without the buttons.

BTW the market only app restriction isn't that big of a deal and really not a dealbreaker on the phone.  The market has nearly all the apps you'll ever want or need.

...and any app you might want on the market but don't want to pay for can be sideloaded...
