Hmmmm.... Upon doing some more research, I am not sure what we are all getting in a fuss about. The only real restriction I found was the lack of the unofficial apps option. It is my understanding that the Backflip still has access to the official Android marketplace. The official market does not have a screening process like Apple, only an automated one that looks for technical coding errors. So (again, if my understanding is correct) you would be missing out on what? The porn apps? Oh damn; that's what my laptop is for Roll Eyes

After playing with the phone in an AT&T store yesterday, I have to say that I like the hardware itself (granted the screen could be bigger). The keyboard is very spacious (good for me, as I have large fingers), and the "backtrack" thing behind the screen is neat, if questionably useful. I do wholeheartedly agree that AT&T loading their crap-tackular bloatware on their is a really lame move, and against the whole idea of Android, but there are ways around it.

It seems that the main reason that AT&T has locked out the "unofficial apps" is to try to prevent tethering. Again, kind of big-brotherish, but I suppose it is their network...

Anyway, just thought I'd play the devil's advocate there. Can anyone tell me about some killer unofficial app that Backflip users would miss out on?

only ones i've ever used, i'm sure there's more...

the OG version of "Beautiful Widgets" that HTC ordered a C&D on because it made the phone too close to their Sense UI  (looks hot!)

WiFi Tether as you mentioned

porting the HTC Hero's Virtual Keyboard (trust me, you'll use the Virtual more often than you think you will)

A friend at work got the Droid Eris, and let me tell you you do want access to ALL The apps!  There are some cool ones on there.  I mean the whole point of Android is open source development, so AT&T is kinda defeating the point of Android by restricting it this way.

Anyway the unofficial apps that struck me were NES, Super NES and Gameboy Advance Emulators.

Google filed for a patent for UMTS bands, not GSM bands. Most if not all GSM phones have all 4 GSM bands. It is the UMTS bands that are particular to ATT.

You are right.  Anyway do you know why no one wants to put the UMTS 850/1900 band on their phones?  I was on Newegg.com looking at unlocked Android phoens and NONE Of them have that band!  So inotherwords, the only way to have AT&T 3G on an Android phone currently, at least from what I've seen, is to buy a backflip!

Actually its not just Android either.  There seem to be a lot of phones that lack the UMTS 850/1900 band!  And why does AT&T use such a strange band?  Why don't they and T-mobile just use the same band?

I sense sarcasm...  If you aren't going to contribute positively why bother even replying?  Its an honest question.  Go shop for unlocked phones, most don't have AT&T's band.  AT&T is a GSM phone, I honestly just want to know why most unlocked phones don't have the UMTS 850/1900 band that AT&T requires!  YOu know d*** well that Verizon and Sprint our CDMA therefore have nothign to do with this discussion!

Telus and Rogers in canada use the same bands too. You can get an unlocked droid or as it is called for them a milestone. Much of south america and mexico use the same bands also.

Wait for LTE (4G). Theoretically most of the US (except Sprint with WiMax) will be using the same bands of that, at least, though they will likely still find ways to lock you to only their networks.

but what is 4g?
many say that the advertised sprint's worlds first 4g is nothing more than AT&T's 3g+

I always kinda figured Sprints use of the term "4G" is just faster 3G and nothing more than a marketing term... Kinda like Sega Genesis and Blast Processing!

No it's definitely different. Sprint's 4G WiMax is essentially long-range, slower WiFi. They are just now starting to get it quasi-widespread, and just now starting to offer devices (USB modems) to anything but there test markets. My comment is simply saying that when LTE 4G becomes the norm, at least the spectra used should be the the same across carriers. What this actually means for people that don't drop hundreds of dollars on unlocked phones, well, we'll see.

PS I love how wonderfully off-topic this has gotten Tongue

hmmm... Never realized that.  I figured if Sprint truley had "4G' as long as they've been advertising it for sure by now Verizon or AT&T would of caught up to them...

But then again I'm sure the Giants that AT&T and Verizon are aren't too worried about the little guy Sprint.

Exactly. Not much to worry about Roll Eyes
Sprint's 4G is not wide-spread yet, and not as fast, from my understanding. Verizon is getting LTE launched this year, AT&T is focusing on 3.5G then eventually starting to implement LTE late next year. They all need to upgrade their backbone connections to allow 4G to even happen, first.

so this thread is about a month old and I realize that, but instead of rattling on about the backflip in the Nexus one or Galaxy S thread, I'll talk about it here.

The main problem I see with this phone is who does it cater too?  The die hard android fans hate it, and I know its supposed to be "budget" at $99, but I want to point out the iPhone 3G is also $99.  Why in gods name would you take this science fair experiment gone bad over the iPhone?  If someone is in the market for a smartphone and doesn't wanna pay alot, what are you going to get a crippled, bloated, underpowered android phone, or a full featured iPhone 3G? Either way you going to have to pay $30 for data.

And if this is marketed for the feature phone market, most people who want a feature phone would be content to get a Mythic or Impression or something, where they wouldn't have to pay $30 for data.  My wife really wanted one until I pointed out the Iphone is the same price and does more.  now she wants the Iphone.

I just thought I'd point that out since the "budget phone" argument has been brought up many times in other threads.
