Hello everyone,

It has certainly been a while, a long while. Nonetheless, I decided to drop by and say hello. I am more than pleased to see how the forum is still quite active. I am also glad to see a couple of individuals (Lee, Toast and more.) still helping SE users.

I really do miss the forums, but again I only dropped by to hello.

But what would really make my visit...Is if everyone could post on this topic. I would just like to know how everyone is doing, and what I've missed over the past year. I honestly hope to hear from you guys soon.

Thanks,

-Americo

Good to see you again. The forum is really dead, but occasionally we do get troubleshooting questions. I don't tell people to search anymore, as it's really not hard to be an active helping member with only a few questions a week, or even less often. We get more spam these days than actual posts (see the ban list), but unless Lee and I are done with the forum, or the number of spammers becomes more, I think this forum will be fine. But if one/both of those things happen, we should close it to new posts, and set a kill date to the domain, but offering a download link to the database of (useful) posts. It would save the higher-ups some hosting money, at least. More about the consistent spam: it was from two major mail servers, which I blocked the 131072 related IP's to the server, but now it's random, probably botnet-related, and I have to ban individually now...

I guess PCTechLand died. Oh well, we just weren't as motivated and/or knowledgeable as we should have...

I've been really involved in a large Minecraft community. It is awesome! Other than that, work this summer is killing my free time, and school next fall will be as well.

I will most likely be getting the HTC Holiday if/when it comes out. One of the few that's still on the Eternity, probably the last active member with it. No smartphone has really caught my eye, and there hasn't been a dumbphone that's any better than the Eternity. It doesn't start up right, the screen quits working and restarts, and it gets buggier every day, but I am nostalgic now, but also ready to move on. I made a couple of app posts recently, which is getting decent views, considering our low activity rate.

Those are my current thoughts. What phone are you on? What all is new?

it's really nice to hear from you again, Toast. it seems that you have been one of the few busy ones around  the forum. Nonetheless, you are certainly fulfilling your job as a member.

Sadly, I kind of moved on. I lost my eternity back in winter of '09. I moved from the impression with the infamous text bug, then they moved me to the solstice. I hated that phone. So tat October i bought a mytouch 3g. I never got around to rooting the phone, mainly because it ran very slowly. I stuck with that until February. I gave in to the windows phone. Despite what I said about not ever buying a Samsung phone again, I did. I bought the Samsung focus. I've had it for almost five months now. It is one of the best phones I ever owned. Though sometimes I wish I would of got the inspire, for better app support and customization. But, I decided not to pick it because it lacked a dedicated camera key, I touch screen camera keys.

Other than that, I've apparently drifted away from the forum. School work was killing and the little spare-time i had left was sucked up by Facebook. Now, I'm trying to find a new social forum, I guess. I know my old "modifying" java days are over. So I'm looking for a place i can have fun, you know?

And about Pctechland. I think it was more so about a fact of not advertising well enough. It was basically the few of us that made the forum. As far as I know, Siricharic said we were hacked by an advertising company, crippling the forum. it kind of sucks now.

It's only natural that the forum has nearly petered out since the phone is old. I was ecstatic to find this forum when I got my phone. I had no idea of possible capabilities until I saw them here.

I love the "new posts since you were last here" button in the upper left of the forum page and check nearly every day. I tried the installation of the new Opera that was recently posted, updated googlemaps not too long ago, have keepass on my phone. But my all time favorite application is the GPS application sportypal which works really well on the eternity. I use it for running, but anyone could use it to capture any trip whether running, hiking, biking, or car trip and display it on a map online for free. I have posted about sportypal before, and should probably do so again since there is a new version. I use TKFE to install, I have installed blueFTP but could never quite get that install method to work. TKFE is brittle but works for me.

At some point I will abandon my eternity for a smart phone, but I am not in a hurry.

I have moved  to an Android as my main fone now but still use my Eternity 1 as  a backup on another carrier.  Still a very nice  fone to use.  I still use it  quite a bit for SMS via a PC app..

I upgraded (well, kind of.. I guess it could be seen as a downgrade) to the Pantech Laser, mainly because I was tired of a touchscreen keyboard and didn't want to pay for a data plan when I upgraded. The Laser is definitely not as customizable as the Eternity (heck, I can't even zoom in on a picture after it's taken...), which I kind of miss. I can't even install apps without a data plan (haven't been able to access the filesystem) so I might add a $10 data plan soon to try and get the most out of it. Too bad there isn't a forum like this one for my new phone.

I'm getting into iOS development after getting a used macbook pro (late 2006) from ebay, but I haven't really been able to think of any app ideas.

The forum is pretty dead, except for the few questions we still get once and a while. If you decide to shut down the forum (and download the database), could you send me the database? I'd like to be able to try some of the hacks on my new phone if I can, and maybe do some hacking with my old Eternity (it still works fine, just sitting in it's box now).

EDIT:
How was TKFE discovered? I kind of want to figure out if the Laser's filesystem is accessible at all.

I was thinking that TKFE was fairly common, but apparently, we popularized it (searching google brings mostly us). There is another popular file explorer for dumbphones that has been mentioned here, but the name eludes me. Any thoughts, Americo?

Actually yes, I do remember two explorers. Bitpim and QPST. I remember we got Bitpim to work with the eternity. We had a bit more freedom than TK, but it was no where near dependable. QPST never really worked with the eternity and it was soon dropped from our research. Man, I really do miss those days.

Awesome, my mind actually dyslexically combined the two so my google searches were bogus lol. Thanks! Lee, try those two Smiley

closing to new posts - good
killing the site - bad

google search results need the site to be here
the other boards can use some of our discoveries as a starting point too

i have the infuse now. i would still have the eternity (for more than an alarm clock and backup address book) except that i needed:
1. one new phone to replace a broken one on my plan (my damn assistant broke hers  again, which is how i got an eternity in the first place)
2. to make a few changes to my plan. so i took advantage of the phone discounts.
3. for business purposes, i was soon going to upgrade in order to be able to continue to do the things i need to do.

i was totally going to end up with the inspire but i heard about the infuse, so i put my purchase off until i could see it. saw it on a sunday (its 1st day), and bought two on the  monday.
coming from the eternity, there most likely will never again be a non smart phone that is an upgrade. plus everyone makes their stuff for the smartphones. getting away from wap sites too.

why do i feel like i just wrote a 'where are they now' for a high school reunion

I tried BitPim (it looks like it's mostly for CDMA phones, so mine wasn't listed and choosing Other CDMA phone didn't work either) but I haven't tried QPST yet. I'll try QPST tomorrow most likely.

I tried QPST and got closer than other programs but still can't access the filesystem. According to QPST EFS Explorer, my phone "doesn't support an embedded file system."
Ignoring this message just shows a root directory with no other files, and I can't add a new folder or anything. Pantech really locked this phone down..
