I believe that AT&T recanted their 'threat' to those who like to use their data plans and just throwing-caution-to-the-wind...

As originally posted:

Prohibited and Permissible Uses: Except as may otherwise be specifically permitted or prohibited for select data plans, data sessions may be conducted only for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). While most common uses for Intranet browsing, email and intranet access are permitted by your data plan, there are certain uses that cause extreme network capacity issues and interference with the network and are therefore prohibited.  Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; (ii) as a substitute or backup for private lines, landlines or full-time or dedicated data connections; (iii) "auto-responders," "cancel-bots," or similar automated or manual routines which generate excessive amounts of net traffic, or which disrupt net user groups or email use by others; (iv) "spam" or unsolicited commercial or bulk email (or activities that have the effect of facilitating unsolicited commercial email or unsolicited bulk email); (v) any activity that adversely affects the ability of other people or systems to use either AT&T's wireless services or other parties' Internet-based resources, including "denial of service" (DoS) attacks against another network host or individual user; (vi) accessing, or attempting to access without authority, the accounts of others, or to penetrate, or attempt to penetrate, security measures of AT&T's wireless network or another entity's network or systems;  (vii) software or other devices that maintain continuous active Internet connections when a computer's connection would otherwise be idle or any "keep alive" functions, unless they adhere to AT&T's data retry requirements, which may be changed from time to time. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices is prohibited. Furthermore, plans(unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to computer accessories, Bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose.  Accordingly, AT&T reserves the right to (i) deny, disconnect, modify and/or terminate Service, without notice, to anyone it believes is using the Service in any manner prohibited or whose usage adversely impacts its wireless network or service levels or hinders access to its wireless network, including without limitation, after a significant period of inactivity or after sessions of excessive usage and (ii) otherwise protect its wireless network from harm, compromised capacity or degradation in performance, which may impact legitimate data flows.  You may not send solicitations to AT&T's wireless subscribers without their consent.  You may not use the Services other than as intended by AT&T and applicable law. Plans are for individual, non-commercial use only and are not for resale.   AT&T may, but is not required to, monitor your compliance, or the compliance of other subscribers, with AT&T's terms, conditions, or policies.

Source: http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp#data

However, after many angry and upset AT&T customers found out about this, there was an uproar that caused AT&T to CHANGE it's position on this:

http://www.maclife.com/article/news/att_realizes_error_its_ways_internet_cheers

It's all up to what the current terms are, I would suggest going to AT&T's actual website and check on it for yourselves.  I personally just use my phone for whatever I want since I am paying AT&T for UNLIMITED data, and that is what I'm going to do until they update there TOS (Terms Of Service) to say otherwise.

Thanks (steps off soapbox)...

do u get charged for this? i have unlimited texting and calling so

You will need unlimited data plan.

More info here:
http://www.samsung-eternity.com/how-to/eternity-as-modem/

No one STILL has not confirmed if you get charged if you have unlimited data, or if you need both unlimited data AND calling.

Internet uses data so you will need a data plan.

This is basically using your 3G Internet from your phone to work with your PC
Internet -> Eternity -> PC

Thats why you will need to install the USB Drivers also called "USB Modem Drivers"

I doubt you will need a unlimited calling because you're not dialing somewhere, you're basically using the internet on the phone 'with' your PC instead of your phone but as stated on the other thread if they notice a lot of activity they will say something about it or catch on I guess.

I have used the tethering when I travel to my in-laws house who still don't have high speed internet. I can connect to the internet at about 485kbps by tethering over Edge at their house. Last time I was there, we visited for 3 days and I used about 250MB of data. No extra charges showed up on my bill for that month from AT&T and I am betting it is okay, as long as my total monthly data doesn't exceed 5GB and I only use tethering a few times a year.

My advice: Better off not cheating the system.  They have rules & guidelines in place for a reason.

Wow this is pretty cool thanks,
Glad you could find this useful... it was frustrating reading every samsung eternity guide out there only to find that my phone was the culprit preventing a successful connection to the 3g network.

Can anyone confirm that you had these settings in your phone upon purchase? I do get the feeling that ATT is modifying settings intentionally to prevent tethering.

BTW, I love my phone!

Which settings are you referring to - the wap.cingular.com ones, etc?  My phone arrived on Wednesday and the Media Net and AT&T MMS profiles are similar, but both are listed with NONE for Authentication type and blank for User ID and Password.  Each appears similar to each other otherwise, except for different home page.

Do you/anyone know the equivalent of DUN on Linux system?  I have a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu and I'd love to know how to do the DUN steps on my system.  Thanks!

I have used tethering several times over the last two months being in E. Texas with no internet access.  As someone else stated, I used several hundred MB over a 3-4 days and have seen nothing on my bill.

When I go to MyAccount online, I do not see a tethering option anymore under features.    I only see tethering listed under BB and Smartphone/PDA's Data plans.    It is interesting to note that if you have Data plan for BB or Smartphone/PDA's you have unlimited data, but if you get the Data plan w/ tethering, it says there is a 5G limit.  At least that is how I read it.

Anyway, I plan to continue tethering when in E. Texas until ATT gives me a reason to stop.

I found several references with detailed instructions on how to pair Ubuntu/Linux with a BT phone.  But none are working for me.  I don't know whether it's an idiosyncrasy of this phone or something to do with the OS.

Tried my XP Pro laptop - didn't work either, but BT might be kind of messed up.  Going to try one last time on my desktop (XP Pro) w/BT dongle and see if that works since most people here can at least get Windows to tether to the phone.

If anyone has successfully tethered the Eternity to Ubuntu, would appreciate a PM.  Thanks.

Its great that the sticky on this forum tell you what you need to do with your computer to allow tethering, but its only half the steps required to propely tether your phone to your computer over bluetooth.

STEP 1: Prepare the phone

On the eternity, goto "Menu>Settings>Connectivity>Network Profiles and select create

Set Name: (whatever you want)
Access Point: wap.cingular
Auth Type: Secure
User ID: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Protocol: HTTP
Home URL: http://
Proxy Address: wireless.cingular.com:80
Linger Time: 300

STEP 2: Add your computer to your bluetooth devices and add a DUN connection
STEP 3: Create a Dial up networking connection using the com port you just made for bluetooth
Basically, the ONLY thing you need to do is make sure you enter:

*99**1*1#

...for the phone number. No username, no password. You can actually goto properties of the connection that you just created, and uncheck "Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc."

Now you should be able to simply goto the "connect to" menu in windows and just select the bluetooth DUN connection, and it instantly connects without prompting you for anything.

I really am curious as to why every guide skips the first step, I do know ATT is agressively trying to prevent users from tethering, so its not surprising they dont set up the phones the same to prevent you from consuming more bandwidth.

When do you ever refer to the "Set Name" above?  I'm wondering where in the process of DUN connection setup you refer to this particular Network Profile.

Also, you list *99**1*1# as the dial-up #.  In other postings for BT connections (for Linux), they have "ATD*99***1#" as one of the commands for Cingular.  Should these be the same, or is your # with the 1 inserted between the 3 *'s a newer # that I should also change in the other script?

Thanks.

ATT make the rules to protect their network from going down as people use their tethered phones to run servers, download movies, operate p2p networks and the like. The 5Gb limit for tethered plans is so as not to give you the right to do the above. I have been tethering my laptop twice a day on my commutes to and from work for a couple of years now with just the dumbphone data plan with no problems, I don't go wild with it but neither do I monitor what I do. I may watch a youtube video but don't I watch my slingbox etc. One thing... your bill distinguishes between tethered and non tethered data so you can watch how much you use. My tip, 5gb seems to be a marker across several suppliers and plans, stay below that and don't ring any bells. 5gb is a lot of data. Streaming moodio 8 hours a day 5 days a week at 40kb/s doesn't use that much! If you want to tether and use more than that you deserve to come to the notice of ATT. Keep to <5gb, don't spoil it for yourself or for anyone else.

If anyone got an error#633 *device in use* just go to Menu>Settings>Connectivity>Network Profiles>select the new network profile you just created in Step 1. It fixed my problem with tethering through bluetooth.

Man if someone can help me out setting this up for Mac users...you would save my life!  Huh

I have mine perfectly set up and working. I am running OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard".

Just follow these instructions:
1) Go to Network under System Preferences
2) Click the "+" icon under you other network interfaces.
3) Select Interface: Bluetooth DUN, then Create
4) Telephone Number is *99#
5) Account name is WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM [all caps]
6) Password is CINGULAR1 [all caps]
7) Under "Advanced", Vendor should be Samsung, and model is GPRS(GSM/3G), make sure APN is left blank, CID is set to 1.

I believe all these settings can be input through some sort of wizard, probably under "Set up Bluetooth Device".

Anyway, those are all the settings you should need. Not sure exactly what setting up the network profile like the OP did does (maybe just for newer Eternity's that AT&T changed to prevent tethering?). Keep in mind that some of the locations I mentioned might change if you are running 10.5 "Leopard" or especially, 10.4 or lower.

I'm trying to tether my Eternity to a netbook computer that has no bluetooth connection.  I was able to do this with a USB cable before they blocked the old way of setting it up.  Do you know how I can configure my computer to do this with USB rather than bluetooth?

Thanks,

Harold
