Ok, I had to read this thread in its entirety to finally get a definite answer about the 3G turnoff.  Here's the succinct version:

To turn off 3G, dial *#6984125*#; select option three, "Network & call settings;" then select option two, "Network mode;" then select "GSM only." If the "Network mode" option is not there ("Network order" may be there instead), find an older AT&T SIM card (one from a previous phone should work), insert it into your phone, and repeat the same process. If that doesn't work, you may have to find a different SIM.

Please correct me if I've gotten anything wrong. My phone does not display the network mode option, so I'm not definite on the menu names.

Could and admin please edit the first post and put this in there? It will most likely save time for anyone else looking for the 3G turnoff.

Thanks Rae3012 cookie for you,

I was on T-Mobile and had turned off the 3G because it doesn't work with them. I just today switched over to AT&T and was scouring the Internal menu's and could not find where I had shut 3G off at. So when I got home I did a search to find where to go. Low a behold I did not have the "Network Mode" menu and only the "Network Order" menu. Then I found your post and sure enough when I put my T-Mo SIM card back in the "Network Mode" menu is back. "Network Order" menu is there as well.

I wonder why the newer SIM card would remove that menu...Huh

Thanks for the instructions.  I use my Eternity in an area where the Edge connection is much more reliable than 3G, but the phone would always pickup 3G even if the Edge signal was stronger.

I did not have the menu to disable 3G using *#6984125*#, I could only set the order which seemed to do nothing.

By inserting a SIM card from my previous AT&T Edge phone and using *#6984125*#, I was able to access the network menu and turn it to GSM only, then put my real SIM card back in.  Connection woes solved, locked to the Edge network.  I don't really use the phone for data connection very often.

Ok, I just found the admin menu.  It makes it much easier to turn off 3g.  Use the code *#6984125*# from the dial pad and choose option 3 (network & call settings) then 2 (network mode).

Am I correct that I would change it from AUTO to GSM ONLY?
my phone does not have that , no net work mode setting. only GSM or PCDMA "first" option

Maybe we can use this to add a mail shortcut, Please note i said maybe

The menu thing can be changed.  Dont really know how to explain it.  NOtice how they shifted around?  Now it says camera with the tv logo?  Clicking that button actually opens the camera.  Look at the picture.

Done by changing these values in the nv_default.ini file.  Maybe we could link the att nav button to games or something.  Lots of numbers to try.

NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_01=37
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_02=42
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_03=17
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_04=78
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_05=18
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_06=14
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_07=79
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_08=80
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_09=81
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_10=82
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_11=38
NV_SI_MAIN_MENU_BLOCK_12=16
