I'm not clear on this. I use Google Maps v2.3.2 now and it will locate me but only within the nearest 1000m or so. Will doing these changes make the GPS more accurate so I can actually locate where I am?

your gps isn't working yet. you either installed it wrong, or you have not waited long enough or are in a bad place to get a fix.

It has always done that. I just installed directly on my phone from google.com website. My husband has blackberry and he gets precise location. Mine is always a huge circle no matter how long I wait.

The one from google doesn't support gps functionality.

You need the one from the forum (search), it is a modified version of the app for the impression if I'm not mistaken.
