Are you sure when you get the long messages they don't come in as mms messages?

when other people who have at&t send you texts over 1 page, it comes all in one message. so i can see how you would come to the conclusion that it would be an iphone feature (at&t only, unless it's unlocked). the guitar player in my old band had at&t, and i would receive 2 or 3 page texts from him all in one message, he does not have an iphone. when i receive multiple page texts from my guitar player in my current band, they come in separate messages (he uses sprint). when people from verizon send over 1 page in a text to people on other carriers, their messages get cut off after 1 page. my girlfriend uses verizon and has to send 1 page, then start a new message to send another page. hope this clears things up a little.

UDH on AT&T's network allows for splitting and putting back together long text messages. Unless the other carries know what AT&T puts in it's header then there is no way to piece it back together.

i kinda always thought it was the phone that did it. but it makes more sense that the carrier does it.
either way, anything after 160 counts as two, whether it was sent/received as one or not.
