replacing digitiser questions (already took phone appart)

ok, well my phones touchscreen completley stopped working so i decided to replace the digitiser. well i got everything appart and went to pull the digitiser out. "Hmm, seems to be really thin and the ribbon cable didnt come off." OH, theres another peice, so i pull the second peice off(aparently the digitiser is two seperate peices of plastic with a gap between them or something.) well now there is a LOT of sticky residue on my LCD. im wondering if i made a BIG mistake and messed up my phone or if thats normal. and if it is normal, how i nthe heck am i supposed to get all that crap off so that i can install the new digitiser? i dont want to start trying to take it off if i need a new LCD. heres to hopeing i didnt mess my phone up more. lol thanks in advance for any help.
