I have been a member for a few days now.  I am unemployed, so I have ample HOURS to look at threads to answer my questions.  I know how to use the search button, and have.  I have looked up everything from opera to raising the volume to changing the light bar colors and how to get gmail on the phone.

I got my phone yesterday.  I have played with pretty much everything.  There has been talk about the default browser being slow and not the best option.  I see opera is an option, I see bolt is bad, but Americo says "everything that is downloaded from opera is corrupt."  I see the thread about downloading opera...and it doesnt work.  Someone says you should download it through rumkin...but it's not there, and when you type in the search bar on rumkin, how do you press "enter" to search?

The nut of what I'm saying is that a lot of the talk is way over the head of the everyday 30 year old who just bought a cool phone and wants to make it a little better.  I am not a computer designer...but I know how they work and am actually pretty proficient when using them.

More times than not, when someone states "all you need to do..." or "you should do it by..." or "this is how you do it...."  there are not clear directions that actually work.  It seems everyone assumes you are "in the know" and can follow the instructions.  When something as simple as downloading a browser takes me over 20 minutes and without success, then the instruction is just falling short.  Is everyone on this site throught their phone?  Is that why a lot of talk is just a few words?

Using the search is frustrating because I have spent about a dozen hours looking through pages and pages of threads and posts just hoping that that next post I read is the one that actually says:

"#1.  Type this...
#2.  Enter here...
#3 click this
#4 this is the address for the site...
#5 click finish

Your Done!!! Now you have Opera, or now you have a free game, etc."

Don't get out of control when you read this because I do understand that there really are threads that actually have this format, or this level of instruction.  But most are just assuming you know what rumkin is or medianet, or all of the other sites or browsers everyone is talking about or referring to.

Since I am clearly a newbie...maybe there should be a topic for us (newbie).  Some place to get our feet wet, like a legend of phrases or sites, including real working links that take you to what is being talked about in a clear and concise way.

A list that says:
THESE ARE ALL ETERNITY FRIENDLY APPS/OPTIONS
"Browser Options
Name/Link
-
-
-

Games
Name/Link
-
-
-
Music Sites
"
"
"
Blah,Blah,Blah"

You get what I mean? Something friendly and not so "all you have to do is..."
Now I'm going to keep looking for threads that will actually tell me how to do the things I want to do...like raise the volumes....I liked that one...it's a little hit and miss and not all in one place but I get the picture.  A lot of work has been done to figure a lot of this stuff out by a lot of people...it may do them a service to make that juciy info easily usable.
My hats off to everyone who has woked their butts of to create helpful tools for those who need them, and those who have given good links to them.

I hope I haven't sounded angry...I am not at all.  I am very appreciative for this source, and grateful.

Do you have unlimited data, or a USB data cable for your phone?

If you have unlimited Data then I can help you. But personally, I like Bolt better than Opera.

I do have unlimited data...not message. I do not have the cable yet.  I found a way around the cable for getting music off my laptop and onto my phone.  I just upload music to my own site and hen download it onto my phone...it worked great.  Slow, but great.

I'll take all the help I can get.
Thanks!

Enjoy reading. These should be enough to get you started. Search for more after that. If you need help, just ask. You will probably want to invest in getting a USB cable though. That will help with a lot of your hacking. AND I use Bolt. I like it.

Bolt and Opera mini are both very nice. And both can go mobile browser and full HTML view.

As far as opera mini being corrupt with what it downloads, nah.

There are different threads because someone new comes along and posts another one like this instead of in a thread on opera mini or bolt. Not much we can do about that.

Both browsers can be downloaded from the internet using your phone.

Then you need to goatbreak them (ATT Branding) and make full screen if you like.

1. i am not a fan of babying people.
2. i agree, many people (I include myself in this) forget about the basic answers and go straight to advanced stuff. hopefully because they think people have tried the basics already before coming here.
3. i don't suggest people with little knowledge or experience attempt some of the advanced procedures.
4. i agree, and have suggested (I'm rarely on a pc or i'd do it myself), that once a 'trick' is found and bugs worked out, that someone make a 'tutorial' on it. this way people don't need to scroll through 14 pages of thank yous and edits and try this ways.
one post. all edits and bugs worked out. final version. easy to use. plain and simple language.

Nunya,

The first link in my post is basically that. It is a "quick hack guide" for new users so to speak. And I would venture a guess and say that many of the people on here, if they are even attempting to hack their phone, they have some semblance of an idea of what they are doing. Definitely not all, but I'd say the vast majority. (Don't make a liar out of me folks).

Give them a little credit. And what the mods are trying to do is teach them. Feed them the info and all they will do is go hungry. Teach them to Search, and you make them Quigley.... Grin
